For as long as I can remember, I’ve heard lyrics. Sometimes they arrive while listening to the radio. Sometimes during an ordinary conversation. Sometimes while driving down the road, forcing me to pull over and write them down before they’re gone.
I don’t really decide when they arrive. They simply do. For years I wondered whether that was a gift. Then I wondered whether it was a curse. Eventually I realized it was probably both. So I stopped trying to ignore them. I started writing them down.
Lyrics come uninvited.
I don’t chase them.
I listen, I write,
and I get out of
their way.
I publish these lyrics
so they have a fighting
chance … a chance
to be discovered,
interpreted, and
turned into song.
The best songs are
rarely written alone.
When egos are set aside
and people truly listen,
amazing things happen.
Hearing a finished song
built from my lyrics
is always a thrill. I’m
never upset by what
someone creates.
I’m usually amazed.
If every lyric I write
becomes a song,
and I never see a
dollar from it,
I’ll still be over
the rainbow.
They can arrive in a moment, or build slowly over time. A memory. A comment from a friend. A line in a movie. A headline. A feeling.
Most of the time, I write them down as they come. I seldom rework them. I trust what I hear.
They’re not perfect when they arrive. But they’re honest. And that’s what matters.
Then I file them here … where they can be found, connected with, and brought to life.
Some people see the world in colour. Some hear melodies.
I hear music and words long before the world gets a chance to.
If a lyric here speaks to you, I’d love to hear what you hear.
Every song starts with a conversation.
